Cootfest

Cootfest In the winter american coots will gather in large groups when they are around open water. I came across a large group of coots the other day and it was amazing. Coots are part of the rail family and like to hang out with ducks. It was like I said seeing 200-300 coots out of the water foraging in the grass. Although they swim well they are rather awkward at flying and walking and remind you of something out of a cartoon. A hawk swooped over looking for a meal and the coots went airborne catching me off guard because I all of a sudden had way too muck lens. They were scramblong to get to the waters edge. They all gathered on the edge and started marching back up to the grass. I think of the coot being like an oppossum with feathers because everything likes to eat them. Next to fish bald eagles have a fondness for eating coots along with other birds of prey. Think I've remedied the problem of having too much lens when I shoot by having another body with a wide angle lens on it, thats part of the learning process with photography if you make a mistake learn from and don't do it agian. But that's life as well
